Katie Cofer
The essence of Katie’s photographic work is to capture the relationship between people and their environments, particularly in the streets of her favorite San Francisco neighborhood, the Mission District. She sees these urban landscapes as unique and characteristic habitats for the people who inhabit them and is always on the lookout for people who seem at one with their surroundings and yet solidly themselves. She loves to discover people who seem to form an organic whole with the colors and shapes of their neighborhoods, as if supported and held by them. Though sometimes crowded and gritty, these spaces also offer a sense of vitality and expansiveness and the potential for connection with other people. For Katie this also relates to themes of culture and identity, resilience, connection and belonging. Her vision is deeply rooted in her own emotional experience of interacting with different cultures, languages and individuals, both personally and in her work as a translator and psychotherapist. In her photographs she seeks to convey the passion, the beauty and the squalor, the vibrancy and the humanity with which the streets are so alive.
